Posted by: Atul Singh

Elliptical trainers or cross trainers are the ideal machines for cardio workout. Elliptical trainer covers and challenges both upper body and lower body. Elliptical trainers replicate a natural stride that allows users to simulate walking, running and stair climbing. Due to its simultaneous use of both upper and lower body more calories are burned. It is important to consider few factors before you consider buying any elliptical trainer.

Goal

Before you even consider buying an elliptical trainer first decide your fitness goals because you will find various elliptical trainer with different specifications and features. If you are looking light cardio workout then prefer buying elliptical trainer with less specifications. If you are looking heavy cardio workout then prefer buying elliptical trainer with some advanced specifications. Price will vary for both the elliptical trainer. The bottom line is that you don’t want to pay more if your fitness goal is not matching to it, so know your fitness goal first before deciding to purchase any elliptical trainer.

Flywheel

The flywheel weight is one of the most important criteria to look for when deciding to buy an elliptical trainer. It basically tells you about the quality, comfort and fluidity of pedaling. Too light flywheel will cause unpleasant jerks while pedaling. Flywheel weight is directly related to resistance, heavier the flywheel, more pedaling will be required to reach the desired speed. Always prefer an elliptical trainer with minimum flywheel weight of 5kg.

Stride length

Stride length basically means the amplitude of your leg movement during pedaling. The stride length in which you feel comfortable is the best elliptical trainer for you and not the one with biggest stride length. If the stride length is less you will restricted and limited. Minimum stride length of 16 inches is recommended.

Resistance

Basically there are two kinds of resistance, one is manually controlled resistance and other is electronically controlled. Changing the resistance level will basically increase the pedaling difficulty. Generally all the elliptical trainers have magnetic resistance which is either manually controlled or electronically. Always choose the elliptical trainer having different resistance level as it would enhance your workout and eventually burn more calories.

Console

Every elliptical trainer will have basic console features like time, distance, speed, calories, heart rate and pulse sensor. Higher end elliptical trainer comes up with in-built Bluetooth feature and also touch console. It depends upon your fitness goals whether going for a touch console or normal console.

Front wheel or back wheel

The most common confusion among the buyers is to whether to go for front flywheel elliptical trainer or back flywheel elliptical trainer. Mostly in domestic cross trainer the flywheel is at the back and commercial elliptical trainer comes up with both front flywheel and back flywheel.

Space and design

Generally elliptical trainers are compact and easy to transport through wheels or foldable option. The elliptical trainers having rear drive system i.e. having back flywheel are rarely compact or easy to transport. On the other hand elliptical trainers having front drive system i.e. having front flywheel are more compact and easy to transport. If you want to move your elliptical trainer frequently then you should go for front drive elliptical trainer.

Max user weight

The weight of cross trainer and maximum user weight supported by the elliptical trainer are inter linked. A lighter elliptical trainer will have lower maximum user weight and mostly vary from 90-100kg. Medium and heavy elliptical trainer have higher max user weight and mostly vary from 120-150kg. If your user weight is just touching the maximum user weight of an elliptical trainer then I would recommend you to go for next higher model to avoid any issue.

Price

The burning question for everyone whoever is looking to purchase an elliptical trainer because it takes a huge investment and you want to make sure that you go for the right elliptical trainer. You will find ‘n’ number for elliptical model with ‘n’ number of prices. You should consider the elliptical which is in sync with your fitness goals and desired specification.

Warranty

Warranty is something which generally people over look due to price. Warranty is the indicator for the quality and the trust manufacturer has on his product. If you go for high end elliptical trainer the warranty will be more and vice versa. You should go for the elliptical trainer which has at least one year warranty and life time frame warranty.

Brands

You will find n number of brands in the market with n number of models for Elliptical trainers. The right way to choose any brand is to look for number of years the brand has been in the industry along with a good after sales service. The top brands as per my research for Elliptical trainers are Life fitness, Technogym and REACH. The standout brand among these three is REACH purely on the basis of right price matching with the desired specifications.
